Q-actin Research and Joint Health Benefits Presented at Positive Nutrition Summit

Carson City, Nevada – April 14, 2023 – The clinical health benefits of Q-actin®, a novel plant-based supplement ingredient that improves joint function and mobility, were recently presented at the Positive Nutrition Summit in London. Sponsored by Food Navigator, the event brought together food business and nutrition experts to discuss how the latest nutritional science can meet evolving consumer demands for natural products that improve human health.

The Q-actin research was presented as part of discussion of food as medicine by Prof. John Draper, leader of the Food, Diet and Health Research team at Aberystwyth University and head of the Welsh Government Future Foods Program. His team pioneered the development of metabolomics for compositional analysis foods and have developed a bespoke laboratory to support nutritional quality analysis of food.

The Q-actin study in 91 adults with moderate joint health issues demonstrated that this phytonutrient from cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) extract significantly improved joint function and mobility compared with a placebo. The results were published in the February issue of Current Rheumatology Reviews.

Q-actin contains the iminosugar ido-BR1 standardized to > 1%. Iminosugars are an emerging class of biologically active carbohydrates that can modulate processes in the body to enhance human health. Studies show that Q-actin reduced LPS-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in both ex vivo human serum and THP-1 cells. TNFα can drive degenerative changes such as in joints when chronically elevated.
